Support & Adopt a Room to Read Girl Education Project

When you arrive, we will ask everyone who come to this party to donate $20 bucks (bring a checkbook if you want) to support the Room to Read Girl Education Project.

With 250 of us showing up at this party and each donate 20 bucks, we will raise $5000 and fund 10 years of two girls' education in Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka or Vietnam.

These holistic opportunities make it possible for two girls, who would otherwise not have access to an education, to attend school through the secondary level.

As sponsors of the Girls' Education program, we will receive an annual Girls' Education Yearbook that describes the program in detail, highlights partnerships, and profiles some of the participants.

Our goal is that each year, the 4HWW, WordPress and BizTechDay communities can reunite to watch our our girls have grown up and also raise further funds to support more Room to Read projects.

Come join us!

Feature Speaker - John Wood

John J. Wood,Founder and Executive Chairman, Room to Read

At age 35, John Wood left an executive career track at Microsoft Corporation to form Room to Read, a nonprofit organization that “combines the heart of Mother Theresa with the scalability of Starbucks” to help children across the developing world break the cycle of poverty through the power of education. Razor-sharp business acumen honed at Microsoft, combined with a passion to change the world makes John Wood a unique, inspiring and popular speaker with universal appeal.

John founded Room to Read out of deep concern that nearly one billion people lack basic literacy and that over 200 million children in the developing world are not enrolled in school. “I was blessed with a solid education which was a wonderful foundation for my future. As a result,

I had a great career at a company that encourages people to dream big dreams. I started Room to Read as a way to give that same opportunity to children in the world’s poorest places.

Education is a hand up, not a hand out. It is within our power to be the generation that ends poverty, so we need to think big and execute flawlessly.”

Since its start in 2000, Room to Read has sponsored the opening of more than 750 schools and 7,000 multi-lingual libraries across the developing world. The organization has distributed over 5 million children’s books in multiple languages and supports nearly 7,000 girls with long-term scholarships. John describes these results as “total tip of the iceberg” as Room to Read plans to increase this literacy network to 20,000 libraries and schools serving at least 10 million children

by the year 2020. The organization currently operates in nine countries in Asia and Africa, including Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Laos, Nepal, Sri Lanka, Vietnam, South Africa and Zambia.

WordPress.com is brought to you by some of the same folks who work on the open source blogging software available at WordPress.org.

Open source WordPress has been incredibly successful and risen from a handful of users to the most-used blog tool in its category. However, as easy-to-use as we could make the open source package, there was still a barrier in that it requires a hosting account, a database, FTP, and a whole alphabet soup of acronyms that make normal people like you and me dizzy.
